Reading is a very important way to develop skills, expand knowledge and stir imagination.  Children should be encouraged to read from an early age and learn to enjoy the experience.  Availability of good books is very important but sometimes a permanent library in the community or in the schools is not a viable option for some locations.  A mobile library helps to bridge the gap and serve that purpose.  So we’ll discuss some of the benefits of mobile libraries.

A mobile library is typically a motorized vehicle like a converted bus which can travel around to different locations.  It is customized to contain racks and racks of books which can be made available to the people who visit the mobile library.

Mobile libraries are often an extension of a permanent library or they can be part of a local community outreach organization.  There are many parts of the world where a central community location is not available or viable.  Members of the community may live in diverse locations and not able to visit a central location like a permanent library.

The mobile library provides a means to visit these residents close to their homes and provide a means for them to enjoy the benefits of books as well as other audio visual tools.  Mobile libraries can be equipped with a variety of items and tools.

For example many of them certainly contain a good collection of books.  But some mobile libraries also have computers with broadband access.  In this way visitors to the mobile library can take advantage of the many resources available free of charge from the Internet. It can open up a vast array of information which would otherwise be difficult to obtain.

Some of the mobile libraries also have programs where people can participate in learning activities.  Volunteers or staff members often travel with the mobile library and can serve as readers for children’s story time.  Or they can provide different learning activities for children and adults alike.

The mobile library often provides a much needed resource for learning and development of skills.  Programs administered as part of a mobile library can include skills development like carpentry, electrical, or other construction related topics.  Other programs can include courses on health care, child rearing, or other important health related topics.

The mobile library can certainly serve a very valuable function for people who otherwise would be unable to take advantage of the learning opportunities presented through a good library system.

There are many mobile library programs which have been established in the US. But these mobile libraries can often be the only way for people to take advantage of skills development and learning in third world countries.

These people are often isolated from central services so the ability for a mobile library to go to them can be an invaluable resource.  The cost to obtain, modify and stock a mobile library with books and other learning materials can be fairly prohibitive, especially for poor third world countries.  However grants from charitable organizations and government support helps to offset these costs and make the programs viable.

These types of programs and services need continued support in order to keep them going.  It is very important to the communities and its members to provide them with much needed learning and reading resources.
